ABOUT

March 26, 2025. 4:00-5:30 PM. Joe Balderrama Community Center 709 San Diego St, Oceanside, CA 92058 The Gourd Birdhouse Workshop With Alice Stone and Reen Magante This creative and engaging workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore the art of working with gourds. With deep roots in Native American art and culture, gourds have been used for centuries in both functional and decorative ways. Available in various shapes and sizes, they provide endless possibilities for artistic expression. This workshop encourages creativity, allowing participants to craft unique pieces inspired by tradition. Using a simple sponge application technique with acrylic paint, attendees will learn an easy and enjoyable method to bring their designs to life. Each gourd has been woodburned with one of the following symbolic designs: Butterfly, Bear, Turtle, or Sun—all of which hold significance in Native American traditions. Detailed instructions will be provided to guide participants through the process. All materials for the class will be supplied, ensuring a seamless creative experience. This workshop welcomes enthusiastic individuals eager to explore their artistic side while appreciating the beauty and symbolism of Native American-inspired art. Reen Magante (Payómkawish) will share a few words in ‘Atáaxum Pomtéela,’ one of the local Native languages, in connection with the art project.
